About
In 1845, a group of Thompson residents met informally to look after the grassy area on Thompson Hill, now known as the Thompson Common. The Village Improvement Society was formally organized in 1874 when 67 people attended the first meeting in the vestry of the Congregational Church. In 1909, the organization was incorporated and adopted a constitution that read in part, "the object of this Association shall be to promote civic improvement, neatness, order, sanitation and to beautify and render our Village attractive as a residential center." The Society further committed to "be interested in, and supportive of, anything and everything that may tend to add to the beauty, healthfulness and good order of the Village."
Today, the mission of the Village Improvement Society remains the same as it was in the 19th century. While the land is owned by the Thompson Congregational Church, it is solely through the efforts of the Village Improvement Society that this treasured space is maintained. Through our membership dues and fundraisers, we are able to pay for mowing, tree trimming, and the supplies necessary for upkeep of the common. And, our volunteers undertake two annual clean-ups, in the spring and fall.
The Village Improvement Society also encourages enjoyment of the common. We try to host events that give people a reason to explore its beauty, ponder its historical markers, relax on its expansive grounds, stroll among its trees, and experience the sense of community it offers.
We are an all-volunteer organization and anyone can join!
